Winona Ryder, professionally Winona Ryder was born in Winona Minnesota. She was named by her parents in honor of the town where they were born. Both her father Michel Horowitz, and mother Cynthia Palmer are authors and editors. Ryder's dad was born into a Jewish family. Ryder considers her self Jewish. Ryder is the sister to Uria as well as half-siblings Jubal and Sunyata. Ryder's family moved from Mendocino County, California at the age of seven old. In the area, there was no electricity. The books on television was her only source of entertainment to pass the time. Eventually, she began to read extensively. Ryder began taking acting lessons at the American Conservatory Theatre in 1983 aged 12 years old. In 1986, she got her first big-screen role in the film Lucas at just fifteen years old. Ryder was bullied at her high school. Ryder hoped her career as an actress would make a difference. Sadly that didn't happen. She continued to pursue the goals she had set. Her breakthrough occurred in the year 1988, when Tim Burton's Beetlejuice. Ryder kept playing successful roles in a variety of films. Ryder was nominated twice for Academy Awards one for her performance as a character in The Age of Innocence (1993).
